FAQ's

1. Starting/riding the motorbike?
While sitting on the bike, place the key in the ignition and turn it to the right. Apply the front brake lever and push the start button located under the accelerator. Do not apply too much throttle prior to starting or you will surge the bike forward.
These bikes are automatic, so no gears - simply use the throttle to accelerate.
2. Lifting the seat to the storage area?
Step off the bike, with the stand down. With the ignition key in the ‘off’ position, turn the key to the left to unlock the seat latch – lift the seat up.
3. Recommendations for safe riding?
Elite Asia recommends you ride slowly and carefully, and do not trust other road users. Thailand drives on the left, therefore gives way to the right. Always be vigilant!
Be very careful when the road is wet - this may cause spilt oil or fuel to form a layer on top of the water, making the roads very slippery.
Use equal braking - attempt to apply the same pressure to both brakes for efficient braking. Do not pull the front brake hard unless unavoidable, as this may precipitate the front wheel slipping (particularly in the wet and riding downhill).
Wear suitable shoes - the standard flip-flops do not provide any protection should you have an accident.
Always wear a helmet and eye protection.
4. Motorbike mechanical failure queries?
In the event that the motorbike has a mechanical failure, call Elite Asia immediately. We will come to you with a replacement motorbike anywhere in Phuket. In addition, please note that unless specifically allowed in writing, the motorbike may not be ridden off the island of Phuket.
Please do not take to a local garage to fix, Elite Asia uses authorized Yamaha mechanics only.
5. Thailand road Protocol?
Both the driver and passenger must wear helmets, which are provided by Elite Asia.
You should always carry your driver’s license, your passport and the rental contract from Elite Asia when out on the motorbike. In Phuket there are multiple police road blocks, where you may be randomly stopped even if you comply with the law. This is standard procedure, nothing to be concerned about.
The police may ask for the tax and insurance papers; you will find them stored under the seat.
Failure to have the correct documentation will result in a fine for you and your passenger - most likely THB300-500. Note that under Thai law you can only be fined once a day if stopped at a road block – therefore, keep the fine receipt in case you are stopped at another road block. Make sure your light is on at all times, even during daylight hours – this is the law.
Do not ride the motorbike if you have any alcohol in your system - the police have breathalyzer’s to check for alcohol content. If you exceed the limit you will be arrested and most likely be deported, accompanied with a high fine and a ruined vacation.
6. Parking restriction queries?
Be aware of where you can park the motorbike. The most sensible option is to note where the mass of other motorbikes are parked. In Phuket, parking is not a simple affair; for example, depending on the day, parking may alter from the right and left side of the road.
If you violate parking rules, the bike may be clamped. You will have to go to the Police station to pay the fine and have the clamp removed. This may take all day.
7. Passport or driver’s license queries?
Elite Asia only requests a photocopy of the information page of your passport and a valid driver’s license.
8. Fuel and mileage queries?
Only fill with Gasoline 91, available at major fuel stations or roadside dispensers and local shops. Once the tank is empty, approximately THB150 (USD 5, GBP 3, EUR 4) will fill the tank. A tank should last about 150km, depending on your style of driving.
9. In the event of an accident?
Elite Asia is there to assist - please contact us as soon as possible. We offer 24 hour assistance to help you through these potentially difficult times. Although language may be a barrier, do attempt to advise those involved in an accident that you have insurance and someone from Elite Asia is on route.
The phone numbers for Elite Asia are under the motorbike seat. We would recommend that you attempt to mask any aggression or anger you may feel - be calm and polite, and you will most likely be treated the same way.
We advise that you do not agree to any compensation or admission of guilt, particularly if the local law enforcement should arrive. As mentioned, wait for a representative from Elite Asia to arrive and we will take the lead role in attending to your needs and resolving problems.
10. Insurance queries?
Having insurance mitigates the potential to have a financial and legal disaster while on holiday in Phuket. Without insurance you may be liable for the cost of all 3rd party bills, which will include all tangible items from the accident and medical bills.
For a slight increase in daily rental cost, these potential problems are covered.
11. No insurance?
Totally your choice, however please be aware of the circumstances you may face in the event of an accident. However, even without insurance, Elite Asia will still provide 24 hour assistance and advice.
12. Motorbike and medical liabilities?
Your maximum liability is THB10,000 (USD 330, GBP 200, EUR 230).
We work closely with Yamaha Thailand to make sure the parts are genuine and the price is reasonable. If the cost of repair or parts is less than the maximum liability then you will only pay the invoiced cost, which will be presented to you if requested.
